About the Framing Calculator

This calculator estimates how many studs you need to frame a wall, starting from the regularly-spaced "field" studs along its length, then adding extra studs for each door or window rough opening.

Formula: Field Studs = (Wall Length ÷ Spacing in Feet) + 1; Total Studs = (Field Studs + Openings × Extra Studs per Opening) × (1 + Waste %)

16in o.c. is standard for most residential walls; 24in o.c. is common for non-load-bearing interior partitions with advanced framing. Add extra studs for corners, T-intersections and blocking that this simplified count doesn't capture.
