About the Roof Shingle Calculator

This calculator converts a roof's surface area into bundles of shingles to order. Shingles are sold by the bundle, and most products are packaged so that 3 bundles cover one roofing square (100 sq ft).

Formula: Squares = Roof Area ÷ 100; Bundles Needed = Squares × (1 + Waste %) × Bundles per Square

Add 10-15% waste for hips, valleys and ridge caps, and more for cut-up roofs with lots of dormers. Ridge cap shingles are often sold separately, so check your product's coverage specs for the ridge length too.
