About the Stair Calculator

This calculator lays out a staircase from the total height it needs to climb and how many steps you want. It divides the rise evenly across all risers, then uses your chosen tread depth to find the total horizontal run and the resulting stair angle.

Formula: Riser Height = Total Rise ÷ Number of Steps; Total Run = (Number of Steps − 1) × Tread Depth; Stair Angle = arctan(Riser Height ÷ Tread Depth)

Most residential codes require riser heights between about 7 and 7.75in and treads at least 10in deep. Comfortable stairs generally fall between 30-35 degrees — adjust the step count until the riser height lands in an allowed range.
