About the Pet Age Calculator (Dog and Cat Years)

The old rule of thumb that "one dog year equals seven human years" is a myth — pets age much faster early in life and then slow down, so this calculator uses curves that better match how dogs and cats actually age.

Formula (dogs): Human Age = 16 × ln(Dog Age) + 31, based on a 2019 epigenetic aging study comparing DNA methylation patterns in Labrador retrievers to humans. A 1-year-old dog is already roughly equivalent to a 31-year-old human.

Formula (cats): The first cat year counts as about 15 human years, the second year adds about 9 more (reaching 24 by age 2), and each year after that adds roughly 4 human years, following commonly published veterinary age charts.

Both formulas are approximations — actual aging varies by breed size (large dog breeds tend to age faster than small ones) and individual health, so use this as a fun, general guide rather than a veterinary assessment.
