Furniture retailers often rate a sofa's capacity ("3-seater") loosely based on overall length, without accounting for how much shoulder and hip room people actually want. This calculator estimates capacity from the sofa's real width and a chosen per-person allowance.
Formula: Comfortable Capacity = floor(Sofa Width ÷ Seating Width per Person)
A comfortable seat is typically 20-24 inches wide; the calculator also shows a snugger maximum capacity using about 4 inches less per person, similar to how a couch feels once you squeeze in an extra guest for a movie night.
Useful for furniture shopping when you know how many people you need to seat, or for checking whether a sofa you're considering will actually fit your household comfortably.
