About the CPI Inflation Calculator
The Consumer Price Index (CPI) tracks the average price of a fixed basket of goods and services over time. The inflation rate between two periods is the percentage change in that index.
Formula: Inflation Rate = ((CPInew − CPIold) ÷ CPIold) × 100
A positive result indicates prices rose (inflation) over the period, while a negative result indicates prices fell (deflation) — CPI data for the US is published monthly by the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
