About the Gini Coefficient Estimator

The Gini coefficient summarizes income (or wealth) inequality across a population in a single number: 0 means perfectly equal incomes, while 1 means one person holds all the income and everyone else has none.

Formula: Gini = (2 × ∑(ranki × incomei)) ÷ (n × ∑income) − (n + 1) ÷ n, with incomes sorted in ascending order and ranked from 1 to n.

Real-world national Gini coefficients typically range from about 0.25 (highly equal economies) to over 0.55 (highly unequal economies) — this simplified estimator works from a small sample list rather than full population data.
