About the Margin and Markup Calculator

Margin and markup both measure profitability but use different denominators: margin is profit as a percentage of the selling price, while markup is profit as a percentage of the cost.

Formula: Margin = ((Price − Cost) ÷ Price) × 100 · Markup = ((Price − Cost) ÷ Cost) × 100

Confusing the two is a common pricing mistake — a 50% markup on cost actually produces only a 33.3% margin on the selling price, not 50%.
