About the Expanded Form Calculator
Expanded form rewrites a number as the sum of the value each digit contributes based on its position — its place value. It makes explicit what the digits in a number actually mean, rather than just listing their symbols side by side.
Formula: break the number into digits, multiply each digit by its place value (a power of 10), and add the results — for example, 4826.35 = 4000 + 800 + 20 + 6 + 0.3 + 0.05.
Whole-number digits contribute positive powers of 10 (ones, tens, hundreds, ...) while digits after the decimal point contribute negative powers of 10 (tenths, hundredths, ...). Digits with a value of zero are simply skipped, since they contribute nothing to the sum.
Expanded form is a foundational elementary-math skill for understanding place value, and it's also the same underlying idea behind scientific notation and polynomial representations of numbers.
