About the Depth of Field Calculator

Depth of field is the zone in a photo that appears acceptably sharp, stretching in front of and behind your focus point. It depends on the lens's focal length, the aperture (f-number) and how far away the subject is.

Formula: Hyperfocal Distance H = f² ÷ (N × c) + f, then Near and Far limits are derived from H, the subject distance and the focal length.

Wider apertures (smaller f-numbers), longer focal lengths and closer subjects all produce a shallower depth of field, which is why portrait photographers often shoot at f/1.8-f/2.8 to blur the background. This is a standard approximation and real-world results can vary slightly by lens design.
