About the D&D 5e Hit Point Calculator

In Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition, a character's hit points grow every level based on their class's hit die and Constitution modifier. Instead of rolling for hit points each level, most tables use the fixed "average" value — a standard shortcut sanctioned by the rules that avoids a bad roll leaving a character fragile.

Formula: HP at Level 1 = Hit Die Maximum + CON Modifier. HP Gained Per Level After 1st = floor(Hit Die ÷ 2) + 1 + CON Modifier, with a minimum of 1 point per level. Total HP = HP at Level 1 + (Gain Per Level × (Level − 1)).

The fixed values work out to 4 for a d6 class, 5 for a d8 class, 6 for a d10 class and 7 for a d12 class, each before adding the Constitution modifier. Even a character with a negative CON modifier is guaranteed at least 1 hit point per level by the rules, which this calculator applies automatically.
