About the Latitude Longitude Distance Calculator
The haversine formula calculates the shortest distance between two points on a sphere along the surface — the "great-circle" distance — which is how straight-line flight and shipping distances between cities are typically measured.
Formula: a = sin²(Δlat/2) + cos(lat1) × cos(lat2) × sin²(Δlon/2) · c = 2 × atan2(√a, √(1−a)) · Distance = Earth's Radius × c
This treats Earth as a perfect sphere with a radius of 6,371km, so results are extremely close to reality but can differ by a small fraction of a percent from more complex ellipsoid-based models like Vincenty's formula.
