About the Thinset Calculator
This calculator estimates how many bags of thinset tile adhesive you need, based on the tiled area and the coverage rate of your chosen notched trowel — larger notches spread more (and thicker) adhesive per square foot.
Formula: Bags Needed = (Area × (1 + Waste %)) ÷ Coverage per Bag (coverage varies by trowel notch size)
Trowel notch size should match your tile size — small mosaic tiles typically use a 1/4in x 1/4in notch, while large-format tiles need a bigger notch (or back-buttering) for full adhesive contact. Coverage rates vary by product, so check your thinset's technical data sheet for exact figures.
