About the Unemployment Rate Calculator
The unemployment rate measures the share of the labor force (people working or actively looking for work) who are currently without a job, one of the most widely tracked measures of economic health.
Formula: Unemployment Rate = (Number Unemployed ÷ Total Labor Force) × 100
The labor force excludes people who are not working and not actively seeking work (such as retirees, students and discouraged workers), which is why the unemployment rate can sometimes move independently of the total population size.
