About the Surface Area to Volume Ratio Calculator

The surface-area-to-volume ratio measures how much surface a shape has relative to its interior volume. As an object grows larger, volume increases faster than surface area, so this ratio always shrinks with size. The size input and the surface area and volume results each have their own unit selector; the ratio itself is unit-independent (1/length) and is always computed from the underlying values, so it stays consistent no matter which display units you pick for surface area or volume.

Formula: Ratio = Surface Area ÷ Volume (sphere: 3/r · cube: 6/s)

This ratio matters in biology (heat loss, cell size limits), chemistry (reaction rates) and engineering (cooling and material efficiency).
