The "37% rule" comes from a classic probability puzzle called the secretary problem, or optimal stopping problem: if you're evaluating a sequence of candidates one at a time and must decide immediately whether to accept or permanently reject each one, your best strategy is to automatically reject the first 36.8% (1÷e) of candidates, then commit to the very next one who's better than everyone you've seen before them.
Formula: Look Phase Length = Total Age Range ÷ e (where e ≈ 2.71828). Decision Age = Start Age + Look Phase Length. This strategy mathematically maximizes the probability of selecting the single best candidate out of the whole range, and that maximum probability is also, coincidentally, 1÷e ≈ 36.8%.
