About the Sum of Squares Calculator

The sum of squares (SS) totals the squared distance of every value in a dataset from its mean. Squaring each deviation makes negative and positive differences count equally and keeps larger deviations weighted more heavily.

Formula: SS = ∑(x − x̄)²

Sum of squares is the raw building block behind variance, standard deviation and ANOVA — dividing it by n or (n − 1) produces population or sample variance, respectively.
