About the Board Foot Calculator

A board foot is the standard unit for measuring and pricing lumber volume — one board foot equals a piece of wood 1in thick, 12in wide and 12in long (144 cubic inches). This calculator finds board footage from a piece's actual thickness, width and length.

Formula: Board Feet = (Thickness × Width × Length) ÷ 12, where thickness and width are in inches and length is in feet

Hardwood and specialty lumber are almost always priced per board foot, so this figure is essential for comparing prices between suppliers or estimating the cost of a project's lumber list.
