About the Sand Calculator

This calculator finds the volume and approximate weight of sand needed to cover a rectangular area at a chosen depth — common uses include a paver or patio base layer, playground sandboxes and leveling courses under concrete.

Formula: Cubic Feet = Length × Width × (Depth ÷ 12); Cubic Yards = Cubic Feet ÷ 27; Tons = Cubic Yards × Density

Bedding sand for pavers is typically screeded to 1-1.5in, while a leveling layer under a slab may be 2-4in. Sand is usually sold by the ton or bag, so check your supplier's exact density for the most accurate weight.
