A fresh-cut Christmas tree keeps drinking water for weeks after it's cut, and a dry stand is one of the biggest fire hazards during the holidays. Arborists use trunk diameter as a simple guide for how much water to expect it to absorb.

Formula: Daily Water (quarts) ≈ Trunk Diameter (inches) × 1

This "one quart per inch of diameter" rule of thumb tends to overestimate slightly as trees age in the stand, but it's a safe starting point — check the stand daily and never let the water level drop below the base of the trunk.
