Most neighborhoods informally treat trick-or-treating as a dusk activity — starting a bit before sunset while there's still light, and wrapping up an hour or two later once it's fully dark.

How it works: The recommended start time is your local Halloween sunset minus a buffer (so kids can see house decorations in fading daylight), and the end time simply adds your chosen duration on top of that start time.

Many towns also publish official trick-or-treating hours, so check with your local government or homeowners' association in addition to this general guideline.
