About the Shutter Speed / Exposure Value Calculator

Exposure Value (EV) is a single number that combines aperture and shutter speed into one measure of how much light reaches the camera sensor. It's the basis of the "sunny 16" rule and the exposure triangle photographers use to balance settings.

Formula: EV (at ISO 100) = log₂(f-number² ÷ shutter speed in seconds). At other ISOs, EV = EV100 − log₂(ISO ÷ 100)

Two very different combinations of aperture and shutter speed can produce the same EV and therefore the same overall exposure — for example, f/8 at 1/125s is equivalent to f/11 at 1/60s. This calculator is handy for comparing settings or metering manually.
