About the Music Scale Calculator
A musical scale is a specific sequence of notes built from a root note using a fixed pattern of steps measured in semitones. Different patterns produce the major, minor, pentatonic, blues and modal sounds used across nearly all Western music.
How it works: Starting from your chosen root note's position in the 12-note chromatic scale, the calculator adds each scale type's semitone interval pattern on top — for example, the major scale uses the pattern 0-2-4-5-7-9-11 semitones above the root.
Pentatonic and blues scales use fewer notes and are especially popular for improvising solos, since nearly any combination of their notes sounds musically "safe" over a matching chord progression. The seven-note major, natural minor, dorian and mixolydian scales form the backbone of most melodies and chord progressions in Western music theory.
