About the Focal Length for Target Field of View Calculator
This calculator solves the field-of-view formula in reverse: instead of finding the angle of view for a known lens, it finds the focal length needed to hit a specific angle of view on your camera's sensor.
Formula: Focal Length = Sensor Width ÷ (2 × tan(Desired Field of View ÷ 2))
This is useful when planning a shot that needs to fit a certain width of scene at a certain distance, such as architectural photography, surveillance camera placement or virtual production, where the required lens focal length must be known in advance.
